.Flv Support In Windows Movie Maker Posted: 04 Jun 2006 12:26 PM |
Hello,
I love using Windows Movie Maker for creating simple movies. Now I would like to tweek a little with a video clip which is in .Flv format (Flash Video). Does Windows Movie Maker support .Flv, or can I download a patch which will enable me to use .Flv files? I would rather not have to use a converter to convert Flv to Avi, but if that was the only option does anyone know of a program which is free or cheap which will let me do this?
Thanks,
Ferguson |

you first have to convert the .flv file with VLC player here:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
once you've loaded your .flv file hit the stop button then in the menu at the top of the player click
File>Wizard>Select "transcode/save to file" click next
Then select "Existing playlist item" and highlight the .flv file in the box. click next
another screen will pop up: Select transcode video and from the drop down box choose WMV 3.. (for the bitrate the higher the number the higher the quality but you're limited by the quality of your .flv file)
Then choose "transcode audio". from drop down box select "mp3" (192 is my default bitrate for this). click next.
For "encapsulation format" Select "ASF". click next.
a field will come up asking "select the file to save to". click "choose" and browse to the folder where you want your video and then type in the file name you want in the "file" field. YOU MUST ADD .WMV TO THE END OF THE FILENAME FOR IT TO PLAY(i don't know if you can do .avi files.. i've never tried it.. but you can convert .avi files to .wmv with Bink and Smacker's free RAD Video Tools (just google it if you want that program)
click next and let the player do it's converting.. it will take a little bit depending on how long the video is. Hope this helps :) |

Thanks for the VLC media player tip and the excellent instructions skyzthelimit
I used YouTube Downloader to get the flv file.
Then VLC worked perfectly for me in transcoding the FLV file to WMV. What a great free program.
I must say without your detailed instructions I wouldn't have thought at first glance that this "media player" was capable of such transcoding - it's not that obvious.
I'll have to have a go at some of the other transcoding options. I'm curious to see if I can get video onto my new MP4 player or VCD/DVD.

Since Windows Movie Maker merely supports the import of videos in .mpg/.avi/.wmv formats, thus it is a must to convert FLV to WMV or other formats mentioned above. |

Exactly, this was exactly my problem, when using flv video movie maker opens correctly the file, runs correctly the video, but for some reason it makes no image preview of each scene, and then that makes MM not create the movie on the step 1 of 2 when you touch save movie.
Convert the files to WMV with any converter and then they will work smoothly. |

FLV is not supported by the series of Windows Media Players like Windows Media Player 12/11/10/9/Windows XP/7.
The ideal solution to this issue is to convert FLV to Windows Media Player more popular video formats like AVI, WMV, MKV, etc.
