Need Overlay Help?
Posted: 17 Nov 2005 11:19 AM
I'm making a movie where I want to make a picture of a mask cross the screen and an item in the picture behind will disappear. I'll have two pictures before & after of the scene with the item present & missing. I need to make a transition that makes the mask move across the screen and transition from the picture with the item to the one without. The idea is to imply that the item has been stolen (therefore the mask). Here's the picture of the mask <a href='http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=11/32010151435.jpg&s=x2' target='_blank'><img src='http://x2.putfile.com/11/32010151435-thumb.jpg' alt='Click to enlarge.'></a>

Any suggestions on how to create this transition?

Hi

If you want to use that image as an overlay you really need to convert it to a PNG image format where the white will be replaced with transparrency. You can then use it as an overlay as part of a title effect or an overlay using Rehans PIP+ plugin.

I have a copy of the file as a PNG (it was too big to post on Putfile). I also have the PIP+ plugin, but haven't really figured it out yet. Can you walk me through how to make this work?

If you send the png to

JAMhithebongo@gmail.com (remove the sticky stuff)

I'll check the image and do the xml for you. Otherwise look at some examples on my website to get an idea (look under pip+ effects)

http://www.hitthebongo.co.uk/temp/maskoverlay.exe

This will install your picture and xml in to the addontfx folder. You can then use and modify the xml for other overlays and learn as you play around with it!

This is only for the overlay and will appear as "MASK OVERLAY" in the video effects menu.

I'm not sure about applying a transition - perhaps others can help ?

A simple wipe transitions (in the same direction as the mask movement should work fine). So have your picture/video of the object in the scene, transition with the wipe to the object out of the scene. If hitthebongo comes up with a moving PIP+ effect that moves the mask overlay from one side to the other at the same rate it should look *sweet*!

The clock is ticking and I've got to dash off to work in a moment to start my nightshift. If you can do somthing CG or DLK or whoever to help Emellesse please be my guest and modify the supplied xml (That plus the fact that I'm not to well aquainted with moving the image frames about in pip+Smiley...)

Must go...

I got the mask overlay from Hitthebongo but it's not working like I was hoping. I've saved a sample here: http://media.putfile.com/Mask-Wipe
First I just used the narrow wipe to remove the sheep. Then I did it again with the mask overlay, but it hides everything. If it moved with the wipe, then it would look like the mask was wiping away the sheep. Any suggestions on how to do this would be appreciated.

Thanks!

It appears the hitthebongo's mask overlay is static, with no side to side motion or resizing. I don't have a dynamic version of PIP+ (though I suppose I should) so even if I were to try to set the right parameters, I wouldn't be able to see it.

dlk has done lots of work with PIP+ and moving windows. I suppose something like this post (view post 19171) could be used as a model and modified...

I've a better understanding of what you're after now.

While it's possible to achieve , it's very tricky involving pan-zoom effects on the overlay, anti pan-zoom effects on the image to make it remain static, resizing the overlay to take account of the pan zoom effect, and probably a few other problems along the way!

I'm always reminded of that sword fight scene in the first indiana jones film where Spielberg got frustrated by the time constraints , and execution of the scene, and just had our hero shoot the villain.
How about abandoning the pan effect on the overlay and create another effect to create the illusion of theft ?

I would probably split the scene in to 4 phases

Full hand
Full hand with mask fading in
Full hand with mask fading in to empty hand with mask
Empty hand with mask fading in to empty hand

Or perhaps Katho has some puff of smoke motion overlays to make the object dissapear.

I'm sure there's plenty of other ways of tackling the problem.

If we can invert that mask, then I think it is not too complicated to achieve what is asked here.

Place the clipA, mask image and clipB on the timeline, in this order and apply the following effect: "PIP+ Move left to right" on the mask image in the middle. Then use the two COMP_A_ADD_B and COMP_B_ADD_A transitions to composite the image over the two clips.

<TransitionsAndEffects Version="1.0" >
<Effects>
<EffectDLL guid="{0BEDE179-3361-4eea-9058-11CBB1739D50}">
<Effect name="PIP+ Move left to right" iconid="0">
<Param name="RectA" value=" 0.0, -1.0,0.0,1.0,1.0 ;
1.0, 1.0,0.0,1.0,1.0" />
<Param name="Background" value="black" />
</Effect>
</EffectDLL>
</Effects>
</TransitionsAndEffects>
