Even simple short wmv files fail to import
Posted: 03 Nov 2005 11:20 AM
Hi - any help appreciated

Fairly new computer - Pentium 2.8 D processor
Using Movie maker even short wmv files won't import - returning error message as follows:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\My Documents\filename.wmv could not be imported. Unspecified error

This includes files I have previously successfully and unproblematically imported into WMM on my old computer.

Sometimes on closing and reopening the programme later the file I tried to import is there and fully usable - but IU can't import any more.

Any ideas what is going on? Very tiresome problem.
Makes Movie maker unusable.

1) Does the .wmv play outside of WMM?
2) Is this true of all file types or just .wmv?
3) Have you recently loaded any other codecs/software that might be conflicting?
4) Try checking the 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Compatibility' tab and perhaps click on 'Reset All'
5) If this just started happening, have you tried a System Restore to go back to the point where it was working?
6) Also check www.papajohn.org > Problem Solving > Crashes and Hangs

Thanks for the advice. Here are some answers to the qs

1) Does the .wmv play outside of WMM?

Yes

2) Is this true of all file types or just .wmv?

In response to your question I have just tested AVI - failed in same way to import; MPG - failed

3) Have you recently loaded any other codecs/software that might be conflicting?

Not that I know of.

4) Try checking the 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Compatibility' tab and perhaps click on 'Reset All'

When I have checked this before the list has been unpopulated - Today it has Nero Video decoder and Nero DVD decoder. I have tried WMM with these ticked and unticked and with restore defaults. No improvement.

5) If this just started happening, have you tried a System Restore to go back to the point where it was working? Not tried - for fear of other things getting lost.

6) Also check www.papajohn.org > Problem Solving > Crashes and Hangs

Good link - thanks. I'm going through things but no solution so far.

A little more testing and I have now found that everything I try to import gives the same error message and nothing appears on the screen or in the collections list.

However, on closing WMM and reopening, everything I tried to import is listed in the collections list and playable ( I haven't tried doing anything more demanding with it yet).

So I have a peculiar and tiresome workaround (ie close and reopen every time I want to add a new clip).

But what is going on? What is causing the error message and the initial failures?

Er .. further to last message.

The clips do play - but refuse to be added to the timeline for editing - ie unusable.

HELP!

When you use system restore it will not lose any saved documents, but it will un-install any apps etc which you may have installed. Anything you have installed may be conflicting.
You can if you wish then undo the last restore point and be back to where you started if it doesn't help at all.

I have now tried System Restore back as far as it can go. No improvement.

Looking around the internet I see other people have the same problem eg on this forum http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=21863.

There is some untrapped error that is preventing certain PC / hardware / software combinations from using WMM at all.

But no-one seems to be able to help.

Might Nero 6 be the problem? Is it worth uninstalling and checking WMM?

I don't know exactly which solution worked but I have found a way round this problem (in case anyone else is still struggling)

It seems to be a codec-related issue.

What I did: In the K-Lite configuration pack I chose configuration - Codec tweak tool - and then selected every option to change things (ie on's became off's and vise versa). this had the desired effect - WMM now seems (on a quick check) to be working as normal.

I guess I now have to go through and find out exactly which of the changes did the trick.

Hi
I never did work out what the problem was - but mine has worked since the Klite tweaking.
I strongly suspect either Nero or Paint Shop Pro (???!) myself. Do you use either?

I just finished adding some info to my website about an app called Folder Lock resulting in lots of issues related to importing source files and using them in Movie Maker.... a number of people reported resolving their issues by removing it. Do you have it?

thanks for the feedback... I'm a bit leary of suggesting the removal of something that you didn't even say you had.... good timing between me just finishing my thoughts about it after mulling it over for a month, my adding it to my website, and you posting....

now I need to learn a bit more about Folder Lock, something I've never used.

Brilliant.

A long-running (and very annoying) mystery solved.

A triumph for your site and the detective work!

Thanks a lot

Yeah i only downloaded folder lock so my children dont mess with my stuff on this computer. But it did lock everything even stuff that i didnt want it to lock for some reason so i guess it locked some of the movie maker files as well thats why when u import something to it the folder lock does it give it access.

PapaJohn, Great Inputs and solutions for WMM!

Would you have any ideas for this same error in Windows 7? I think I've pulled out my last hair fighting with this!!

I have a similar problem, but worse yet, I can't even figure out how to create a post here! How then can I make a video?

When I import or try to upload a wmv file, only the FIRST FRAME loads. When I play, only the first frame shows. Yet, this wmv was created on Movie Maker and converted to wmv here.

What on earth is the problem?

Ever tried to using a third party tool like Brorsoft video converter to re-encode your WMV file.
