mpeg streamclip import problem
Posted: 07 Oct 2016 10:55 AM
Hi,

I hope this is the right category for this.

I'm recording live video via movie maker (win 7, home, 64 bit) and need to use streamclip to format, but when I try to open in streamclip it says unrecognized file type. I have opened avi files with streamclip before (but not from movie maker), so am confused.

Anyone have any answers/suggestions?

Thank you.

Welcome to the forums.

I don't think mpeg streamclip supports wmv files. You can try converting your wmv file to a supported file format or post back with what you're trying to do with the clip in mpeg streanclip and we might be able to suggest a another way to do it that wouldn't require you to convert the file.

Thank you for replying.

As far as I can tell, the file is AVI not WMV. It says that on the thumbnail and properties window. Am I mistaken?

I ultimately need to convert to mpeg 4, with specific parameters (bitrate/resolution/audio).

I tried something earlier called dv coverter on a free trial that worked, but when I tried to buy it the website no longer existed. So this software is my next attempt.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

FYI, AVI is what is known as a container format and the video within that file could be encoded with any one of a number of different codecs.

If you have Windows Live Movie Maker 2012 (this is the latest version), you can use it to convert it to an mpeg4 with the specific video parameters you want by using a custom profile.

It says "Version 2012 Build 16.4.3528.0331" was was selected from "Essentials 2012", but does not have "Live" in the title, only Windows Movie Maker.

Is that it and if not can you include the link (I got this version from support)?

I'm using windows 7 home 64 bit if that matters.

Thanks again for your time.

That's the version and it should work on your system.

Hi,

I'm sorry, I'm sure it's so simple, but I can't find where I can do mpeg 4 conversion. I googled and no help.

Can you please direct me?

Thanks.

Try the following:

1. Import the clip into Movie Maker
2. Click on File > Save movie > Create custom setting
3. Enter the video parameters you want, select the audio format you want. enter the name for this custom setting and then click on Save and Save again and then Close
4. Click on File > Save movie and then click on the name of the custom setting you just created (it should be listed under Recent settings)
5. Enter the name you want for the converted clip and select the folder where you want it to be stored and then click on Save
