Movie Maker 2012 is supposed to be able to use .mp4 files directly without conversion. WMM 6.0 may or may not, but a conversion is recommended to prevent problems later.

My suggestion for conversion to .wmv would be Freemake Video Converter or Super Converter. Both are freeware, so you need to check what other add-ons they each offer to install. I always uncheck everything except the program.

WMM6 will import MP4 files, but it won't filter them automatically. In import window, enter the filename *.mp4 to reveal just the MP4 files, or *.* to reveal all the files. It should then import the file without issue.

Do you mind using a third party program to convert your videos? I used an app from Google to deal with videos:

I also think to use a third party conversion software is a good way to solve this problem, I always use the video converter, hope you can try it :D

Windows Movie Maker, as a powerful video editor is widely used among Windows users. Due to its popularity and simple operation, it is favored by more and more people. Powerful as it is, Windows Movie Maker still troubles users for its defect on video support, which is limited to AVI, MPEG and WMV files. That means you will fail to import and edit MP4 files in Windows Movie Maker. In order to make MP4 video clips compatible with WMM, you'll need to convert MP4 to Windows Movie Maker natively supported formats like WMV or AVI in advance. Along with the help from a MP4 file converter, you can complete the task effortlessly.

Well, this is a common problem to Windows Movie Maker users. This problem occurs because MP4 is incompatible with Windows Movie Maker. WMM supports .WMV, .asf, .AVI, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpv2, and .wm codecs and you can find that MP4 is not on the list. In order to make MP4 video clips compatible with WMM, you'll need to convert MP4 to Windows Movie Maker natively supported formats like WMV or AVI in advance.
