Resizing Complete Photos to Appear Inside a Title Overlay
Posted: 11 Mar 2013 11:34 PM
I have a picture of the the back of a Canon camera with transparent picture display window as png title overlay. I want to have a series of photos appear in the display window one at a time. I just tried it out and everything works beautifully except that only part of some photos appear instead of a whole photo. I do not remember having to resize photos in the past ...

What do I need to do?

If you don't resize the video rectangle to fit within the transparent area (or close to it), you'll only see part of the video.

Think of it this way:
1) You have your original video.
2) You are overlaying the full screen image with a small transparent area.

The image will cover all of your video screen and what shows through is just part of the video. If what you want is a small image of your video to show through, you need to resize the video so it doesn't use the full screen, but just the area behind the transparency.

If you look at several of my overlay titles (such as the PSP overlay or the iPhone overlay) you'll see the video rectangle being resized to match the position/size of the transparency.

Thank you Blaine.

I am using only still photos of various sizes. I'll try resizing a few and see how that goes.

I do not remember needing to do that before, maybe I was just lucky then (or my memory is in the senile mode again.

I appreciate your help.

You don't resize the photos... you change the XML so that the photos are made smaller and fit inside the rectangle.

If you need some help with this, post a copy of the overlay along with whether this is a 4:3 or 16:9 project and I'll try to help.

Blaine,

Thank you for your offer. Where can I post a copy of that overlay?

Blaine,

The overlay I am using is a substitute image for PapaJohn Overlay4.png. So I looked in my Shared folder and have a problem with the ten PapaJohn Overlays. There are the images for the ten PapaJohn Overlays in the Shared folder but in the AddOnTFX folder there is only the XML the first four of the Overlays. When I open Movie Maker 6.0 there are, again, only the first four PapaJohn Overlays.

I have Windows 7 64-bit and downloaded the Basic PapaJohn Overlay Starter kit when I first got this computer. I have never before had reason to open the XML folder or try to use more than the first four PapaJohn Overlays. So I did not know until now that I had this problem. Does this problem mean that I need to download the PapaJohn Overlays again? Is there a special Windows 7 64-bit version?
------------

Back to my Canon Camera overlay problem: I downloaded "Blaine's Overlay, iphone FS (4:3)" and it works perfectly on all of the photos I want to use.

If you gave me the XML for your iphone overlay to use as the Canon Overlay would that work as a separate overlay rather than as part of the PapaJohn set?
-------------------
Just for my information. Here is the XML for just PapaJohn Overlay4.png which is what is now used for the Canon Overlay. Can you see what would need to be changed in it to make it work for and show all of the photos as your iPhone Overlay does, or do you still need the Canon image to do that?

</Title> -<Title guid="PapaJohn Overlay 4" iconid="13" name="PapaJohn Overlay 4"> <Param name="Animation" value="TitleStandard"/> <Param name="Description" value="Superimpose Image 4"/> <Param name="LogoBitmapFilename" value="Overlay4.png"/> <Param name="LogoRect" value="0.00 0.00 1.00 1.00"/> -<Paragraph> <Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderLast"/> <Param name="ShadowOutline" value="None"/> <Param name="BoundingRect" value="0.05 0.88333 0.9 0.08333"/> <Param name="FontSize" value="18"/> <Param name="Font" value="Monotype Corsiva"/> <Param name="IsBold" value="true"/> <Param name="HorizontalAlignment" value="Center"/> <Param name="VerticalAlignment" value="Top"/> <Param name="EntranceEffect" value="EffectFade"/> <Param name="EntranceDuration" value="0.75"/> <Param name="ExitEffect" value="EffectFade"/> <Param name="ExitDuration" value="0.75"/> <Param name="IsOneLine" value="False"/> </Paragraph> </Title>

I hope that this is not too much content for one message.

Thank you for your help!

You'll have to ask PapaJohn for support of his overlays if you find some images are missing. Did you check the XML for 5 through 10 to see which pictures they are referring to? They might be in a folder.

For the iPhone or PSP overlay, take a look at the XML that is installed in your AddOnTFX folder. The files are BlaineiPhoneOverlay.xml and BlainePSPOverlay.xml. The key is to set the Entrance, Main and Exit video rectangles to correspond to where you want the video or photo to appear within the overlay. If you don't have these parameters, they default to a full screen of 0 0 1 1 (top corner = 0,0, full screen size = 1,1)

If your image has the cutout in the exact same relative location, you could just replace the image but most likely you are going to need to change the values. If you can post a copy of the image somewhere, I could see how different it is from either of those and be able to suggest what specifically to do.

Hi Blaine,

There is no XML for any of PapaJohns Overlays 5 through 10. I'll ask Papa John about that.

Would you please suggest somewhere that I could post a copy of that Canon image for you to see.

Thanks,

Curt

After cropping that to a 4:3 rectangle, the position of the camera back was:
Over 23% (0.23)
Down 43% (0.43)
Size 40.7% (0.407, 0.407)

I've created an installer that will load the revised photo and the modified XML.

Custom Camera Back Overlay for Windows Movie Maker 6.0.

I also added code for WMM 2.x (XP), but I haven't been able to test it. If anyone does have XP and tries it, let me know if I need to modify it or not.

For the XP version XML on MM 2.6 on Windows 7, I had to change
<Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderLast" />
to
<Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderFirst" />

Then OK! Go figure??

Okay, I switched it and updated the installer. Would you mind checking the iPhone overlays on Windows XP also? I think they may have the same issue.

You're right Blaine. In the two iPhone overlays on XP it must be:

<Param name="RenderOrder" value="RenderFirst" />

BTW, just removing the RenderOrder line also works in 2.6 and 6.0 on Win7. The default must be RenderFirst.

Hi Blaine,

You made it work beautifully and your installer made it an easy install. Thank you very much!

Patrick have a few camera lens, even the "click" sound of a shutter. Would it be possible to add something like that to this camera?

Sounds can't be added within titles or effects, but you can certainly add your own transitions, effects and sound to your project at the required points. When you then overlay this title, all of that will appear within the back of the camera.
