Upload DVD film into movie Maker
Posted: 21 Mar 2012 04:42 PM
Hi,

I have upload a DVD consisting of 10 segments of 10 different high school football games. But,

1. The film will play correctly in the upper left window
2. There is only one image on all the film? I am not able to edit because I only see one image.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

I assume you are using Windows Live Movie Maker, since you mentioned that the preview windows is to the left.

What you are seeing is the expected behavior. WLMM shows a frame from the beginning of the clip to represent the whole clip. You have to scrub through the clip, playing it or jumping around until you get to a point where you want to edit. For example if you wanted to make a split, you could do that. Once you split a clip, the new clip shows an image for the first frame of that new section.

First - thank you very much for replying. Yes, I am using Windows Movie Maker.

I have 12 rows of film all with the same picture. I need to be able to look at all the rows and pick and choose film for coaches and change the order. I need to see it as a whole ....is that possible?

You have Windows Live Movie Maker (the newer, simplified program). The original version is called Windows Movie Maker.

Like I said, that storyboard just shows the first frame repeated over and over, but it actually has the individual frames which you'll see as you play it.

Let's say the movie really has this within it:
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

In the storyboard you'll just see the first frame repeated. The first will be bold and the rest will be slightly gray and desaturated.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

So play that clip until you get to a point you want to split (say when the action changes in some way). Let's pretend that is point H in the movie. If you pause the playback right before that point, go to the Video Tools tab and click 'Split'.

Internally you are doing this:
ABCDEFG | HIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

But on the storyboard you see this:
Aaaaaaa | Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Basically the first frame acts as a reminder of what is in the clip.
You could continue splitting the clip in other spots too. Imagine you end up with this:
Aaaaaaa | Hhhh | Mmmmm | Ttttttttt

Now you can move these around, stick stuff in between, add titles, effects, transitions, etc.
(My Movie) | Mmmmm | Hhhhh | Aaaaaaa | Tttttttt | (The end)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!You are very good!!!

I am a visual person and would like to see the story board A-Z. Is there another program I should use?

The goal is to add video and slide and make a DVD to send to college coaches. In the past I did use windows movie maker and it let me see the a-z story board.

Any suggestions?

THANKS AGAIN!

You can install the classic Windows Movie Maker. There's a link to WMM 6.0 in my signature.

Why? Why does Live Movie Maker show the exact same image in all of the "clips"? And, because it does this, why would I use it instead of Movie Maker? I still have to play through the movie to make my splits, regardless which program I use so why did Microsoft do this? (Most likely for the same reason they do everything else that is useless/regressive.) My impression of this less than impressive "upgrade" is it is a gimmick that serves no purpose. Stop wasting our time...
