Spontaneous/irrevocable conversion from 16:9 to 4:3?
Posted: 20 Jul 2011 08:25 PM
Problem: Why does WLMM spontaneously/inexplicably/irrevocably convert my (source) files from 16:3 to 4:3 (both the edited and unedited) clips AFTER several minutes of “merrily proceeding” (and successfully-so to that point) during the editing process (without any overt command by me)? Yes, I specify 16:9 at the outset, and never overtly make a further change. But --- sooner or later --- all clips are suddenly rendered at 4:3, and I can find no way to revert back to the original 16:9. (Even after shutting down and recalling the saved formerly-satisfactory project, all clips are rendered at 4:3, Yes, the 16:9 box is still highlighted.).
Just FYI, I am one of those MANY former quite-satisfied WMM users who are VERY dismayed at Windows “dummying-down” WLMM from the 2.6 WMM --- omitting the timeline and capture-stills features, in particular. But since my latest camcorder exports MPEG2, can SADLY no longer use WMM!
Ay suggestions to solve the above problem will be MOST appreciated! Thanks!!! Richard

The original video... is it a 4:3 aspect ratio? I suspect that WLMM is processing the video. Initially it probably stretches it to fit the wrong aspect ratio (16:9) and then when has completed the pre-processing, shows it at the correct aspect ratio of 4:3. If so, you should set your project to 4:3 too so that it matches.

Additionally you should be able to use WMM 2.6 (or better yet WMM 6.0) on Windows 7. If the issue is the MPEG2 video, use a file converter like Freemake to turn it into .wmv video, then edit.

Thanks, Blaine. But no --- the source material IS 16:9. What is confounding is that WLMM works fine for awhile during the editing process (i.e., showing both the unedited and edited scenes as 16:9). Then suddenly with no command from me, all scenes are converted to 4:3 (i.e., compressed horizontally). Richard

Back to my other suggestion. Since the file type is MPEG2, use Freemake Video Converter to turn it into .wmv. I think that should prevent it from switching aspect ratios on you.
