WMM crashes when I "Import Video"
Posted: 04 Mar 2010 06:02 PM
Hi,

I make subtitled videos for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to post on Youtube, until lately.

For some strange reason my WMM crashes every time I try to import a video to subtitle.

I have repeatedly reinstalled WMM but it still won't work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Frank

Which versions of Windows and Movie Maker do you have and what file did you download to re-install Movie Maker? Also, what's the file format of the file you were trying to import when Movie Maker crashed?

I downloaded a WMM it says it is version 2.0.3312.0. And all the hiles are windows media audio/video files.

I had tried to install WMM from my disk, but it never took, so I went online to find WMM and installed it.

If you had already updated Windows XP to Service Pack 2 or 3, then you should have had version 2.1 of Movie Maker on your system. There's not a separate download for version 2.1 and installing version 2.0 over top of version 2.1 will cause problems in Movie Maker. To fix that, try doing a System Restore back to a date before you downloaded and installed version 2.0. If you can't restore back that far, try using Windows Update to update to Service Pack 3 (if you have Service Pack 2) or re-install Service Pack 3 using this download.

I have had this problem lately, and I found a solution.

Instead of clicking "Import Videos," click a different one such as "Import Audio or Music." If it works without crashing, then the next step should be easy. On the drop down menu that says "Files of type", click the drop down menu and change it to "Video Files." Go to My Videos, and it should crash again. This means that there is a corrupted file somewhere in My Videos, and I have no idea how to fix that. The temporary fix would be to put all the video files you need in a different folder in "My Documents" and using the method above. If you need any help with this, just reply back and I will try to make it clearer. Hope this helps!

Smartdude, do you have a mixture of WMM 2.0 on your system? If so, that is the cause of the problem. The best solution is to do a system restore back to before WMM 2.0 was downloaded and installed over WMM 2.1.

You may try Handbrake or Brorsoft Video Converter to encode your file format first.

I used Brorsoft Video Converter to encode my videos into WMV first before editing.
