WWM freezing when Importing
Posted: 22 Feb 2010 10:10 AM
Can anyone help me?

My windows movie maker keeps freezing. What happens is when I import any kind of media (audio, video or pics), it freezes as soon as it starts importing. It doesn't start freezing at any percentage, it freezes at the very start of importation.

Is there a solution to this problem?

Please help me.

Yes, I'm having the very same problem with WLMM. What I get (downloads from either Sony DCR-TRV80 or Canon Vixia HV40) is a storyboard that looks like a filmstrip: the first scene is repeated over and over and over. Further, all functions with WLMM are now essentially stalled (frozen), and I frequently must do a forced shut-down of the computer. (Note: I have successfully been using the WMM 2.6 with the Sony --- no problems there. But I [obviously] now need to use WLMM for my Canon video. My new HP computer is W7, 64 bit.) The solution is probably “something simple” ---?. Anyone out there with the solution for Spindler2007 and myself? THANKS! Richard

The version I have is 6.0 I think. I tried downloading the old 2.6 version and that won't work either. I've looked everywhere online, tried everything and still nothing.

Pls someone help me and Iainhartrd.

Try the following test. Download this countdown loop, then open a new Movie Maker project and go to "Tools > Options > Compatibility" and uncheck all the filters ending in .ax. then try importing the countdown loop into your Movie Maker project, and (assuming it imports) add it to the timeline/storyboard and see if you can publish this as a movie.

I've downloaded the video like you said but its a WMV and for some reason, my laptop can't seem so play WMV files because the mfpmp.exe(Media Foundation Protected Pipeline EXE program) isn't working either which is another problem I need to sort out.

As for movie maker, I opened it, unchecked all filters, and tried importing and it still freezes after clicking on the file I want to import.

I think I know why mfpmp.exe won't work. I went through event viewer and it showed that the WMVDECOD.DLL file is corrupted.

Is there a way to fixing this problm?

Just a clarification on my post above: my WLMM freezes (as per Spindler2007's first post) with the first import of ANY video/still-picture source (i.e., not just with the Canon Vixia HV40). Screen freezes, "flashes violently", and a forced shut-down becomes necessary. (Yet, with this same computer, WMM 2.6 works just fine with the Sony video and still-picture imports. But WMM 2.6 won't work with the Canon's format --- MPEG2. Need WLMM to do that, if it just would!) Richard

Spindler2007 - try running the System File Checker to see if it will repair that dll; see this page for more info on how to do that.

lainhartrd - do you have any codec packs/bundles installed on your system and has WLMM always had this problem since you installed it?

Thanks very much. I went through the instructions on how to use this System File Checker and I've replaced the wmvdecod.dll file and it works perfectly now. All I need to do now is to figure out how to get movie maker working.

Hi, Neophyte: Yes, WLMM has always had this problem since very recently installing it on this new HP computer (W7, 64 bit). No, I didn't personally install any codec packs/bundles. Thanks for any further insights! Richard

Spindler2007 - try the test again with the countdown loop and see what happens.

lainhartrd - try uninstalling and re-installing WLMM and then run the test with the countdown loop and see what happens.

Hi again, Neophyte: Okay, uninstalled and re-installed WLMM with same result*. Sorry for my ignorance: how --- as you suggest --- do I "run the text with the countdown loop"? Thanks! Richard *Stalling/freezing also occurs if I only just click the title icon (i.e., not only when I separately try to add media.) If I ONLY open WLMM without doing anything, I can always immediately "X" out of it. Otherwise, I must do a forced shut-down through the task manager.

lainhartrd - do you happen to have the European version of Windows 7? If you do, make sure you have Windows Media Player installed on your system.

Also, there's no need to run that test, if my understanding is correct that Movie Maker freezes when you click on the title icon and before you try to add a file to your project.

Neophyte: No, purchased in the States (December 2009) with Media Player installed. Despite that we've had no resolution yet, much appreciate you evaluating this situation ---. R

I've tried importing the countdown loop vid and it still froze. Isn't there any other solutions?

Spindler2007 - do you have Nero or any codec packs/bundles installed on your system? Does everything else appear to be working normally on your system now?

I've deleted this Vista codec pack I installed when this happened and it still freezes during import.

Spindler2007 - try going to "Tools > Options > Performance" in Windows Media Player and checking/unchecking the box labeled "Turn on DirectX Video Acceleration for WMV files" and then click on "Apply". Then repeat the test with the coundown loop and see what happens. If you still have the same problem and the problem just started within the last 80 days, try doing a System Restore back to a date when Movie Maker was working normally.

Hello. Sorry it took so long. Had the laptop fixed up. I've tried half of the things you said in your last post and it still freezes when importing media. I'm not if I want to do a system restore incase it messes stuff up. Is there any other way of sorting this problem out?

Start by trying the following test. Open a new Movie Maker project and add a single title to the timeline/storyboard and see if you can publish it as a movie. If you can, download this countdown loop, import it into a new Movie Maker project, add it to the timeline/storyboard and see if you can publish this as a movie. When you try this test, make sure to record any error messages and post back with those error messages.

Just had the laptop completely restored two days ago so everything on it is gone now. When I mean everything, I mean effects, videos, music and many other things to make videos.

It sounds like they did a complete re-install of the operating system. Do the standard transitions and effects show up in the listings in Movie Maker?
