Preview problem after adding transition
Posted: 24 Feb 2007 01:02 AM
It seems I can’t preview video or play storyboard after adding transition piece between some of the clips. Reassembling clips does not help, transition pieces in-between different clips cause the same. I tried different clips combination with different transitions. Same effect. Did anyone experience similar problem? Any solution? I am using WMM 6 and Vista Home Premium.

What type of source files are you using? Are any compressed with codecs like DivX, XviD or MPEG-4, for example?

No, the files are avi files downloaded from the camera using Import command from MWW. Not sure about compression. How one would check? Interestingly, there is no problem assembling all the clips on the storyboard. Everything works just fine until starting adding transitions in between some of the clips. Often, between different clips after reassembly.

I have tried AutoMovie, same result. I need to find the culprit transition piece or two, remove them and the preview and play button suddenly work.

I am new to WMM, but I am surprised by rather poor handling of the obvious errors and no notification from the program.

Is there a log file generated by the program perhaps allowing to view what's happening behind?

The same thing keeps happening to me. It only takes one or two transitions to lock up the preview. There's a "fix" for this for XP adding a registry variable, but it DOES NOT work for Vista. Frustrating...

Identical symptoms. I am using new HP a1720n with on board video graphics, Intel GMA 950 and Intel 945G chipset. What computer and graphic card are you using and what was the "fix" in XP?

Toshiba Satellite (A135-S4427). Intel graphics...don't have details since I'm not at home. XP fix added registry entry DynamicSourcesforPreview set to 0. Didn't seem to do anything.

Re: Preview problem after adding transition

It seems the problem maybe related to the graphic card and its memory allocation. As I mentioned in my previous post I was using on board graphic card with Intel dynamic memory allocation (no possibility to fix a minimum required). After unsuccessfully seeking a technical solution to the display problem I decided to cough up another +$100 and I have installed ATI Rodeon X1300 card with dedicated 256MB DDR memory. It seemed to do the trick.

The storyboard and timeline are working fine now. I have about dozen video clips and over two dozen picks arranged in a slide show with fade transitions and added background music for the total duration of about 35 minutes.

However to spoil my fun, the DVD Maker “stops working” now (that’s the message I am getting) after adding the MM project and hitting the Next button.

I was able to publish my “movie” to the computer however, with a rather disappointing quality of the movie ( I published as DVD quality ???). The resolution and colours of the video and picks seems to be well below what I can see by playing the video or watching the picks unedited straight from the camera. Is there a resolution setting I am missing in MM?

Papa John! Your help would be appreciated to overcome the last two items.

Big thanks,

Mark

Found a solution. Go to the time line. Right click on a movie file and select "properties". Then get out of that box by canceling. Bingo. The programme will preview normally.

hope this helps

Patrick, you are able to get it all working just by selecting "properties" from a random movie file and then cancelling out again?

This is a HUGE problem for lots of users and I can't find Microsoft addressing it anywhere. My friend bought a new HP laptop for the very purpose of editing videos with Movie Maker and she is about ready to return the computer because of this problem.

If it doesn't work in the regular 6.0, I doubt you'll have more success in 2.6. Consider converting your source files to WMM "friendly" formats instead.

I am having the same problem with the preview window too. However, I know that the problems I am having are because of using incompatible codecs.

Can you point me in the right direction of a program that will convert to a "friendly" format....without a huge amount of quality loss. Thanks!

We would need to know the type of source file you have... if it is an .avi file, download and run GSpot. Does it play in Windows Media Player? If so, you should be able to convert it.

There is more to read at:

I had the same problem. The preview window worked, then stopped (was black). I had been adding audio clips, and some sound files were overlapping. When I pulled them apart, the preview window worked again.

I have had similar problems to these where imported clips suddenly stopped previewing.

One thing that worked for me a few times was to save and exit WMM then reopen again.

Initially this occured not long after I installed a Codec pack for Vista.
I went back to the Restore Point and it went away... for a while!

Hopefully Microsoft are looking at this issue...

Cheers

ditto for me -- i was getting ready to make the final edits after having invested well over two hours on a project -- whammmmeeee -- can't preview it any longer

i'm not using anything out of the norm - i've even gone back in to delete the transitions and effects --- still won't play

i tried patrick's solution (properties then cancel out -- nothing)

HELP!

I found a pretty lame fix to my no preview problem recently. When you save your project, make sure you save it when it is in STORY MODE not TIMELINE MODE. Everytime I saved in timeline mode I could not get the preview to work. It works everytime now that I save in STORY MODE. Also make sure that the program uses its default decoders, WMT Import Filter worked for me.

Another fun Microsoft "glitch"...

Works on my Desktop, won't work on my notebook:

I suspect this may be a video card issue. I have the same problem on my HP Pavilion dv6244us notebook (dv6000 series), which has onboard video memeory by Intel (Intel GMA950). After adding about a dozen or so fades, I couldn't preview anymore. I wasted so much time, I gave up on the notebook.

But....I copied the raw video clips to a removable hard drive and started up Windows Movie Maker on my Vista home theater pc (P4-2.4GHZ, 2GB RAM, 512MB nVidia 7200 AGP graphics, asus mobo) and it worked. I was able to create an hour long video clip with over 30 fades and transistions with the "preview" working every single time.

The verdict is in for me. Vista's Movie Maker won't work my my HP Notebook with integrated Intel graphics, despite being preloaded with Vista Home Ed. Hmm, I wonder if the blame is due to the low quality graphics or because HP hardware not compatible with Vista.

Does anyone have the preview "black screen" problem on a desktop or notebook computer with integrated graphics? How about with the latest graphic cards?

-George

That "clicking into properties then canceling" worked for me. I just gave it a shot. Seems to me Movie Maker didn't load the selected clips cause the green bar underneath the preview window wasn't there before I did that now it is. If you know the culprit clip(s) then do that trick with em. It seems that when you mess with anything in the properties (even if you cancel) it reloads the clip again whether a change occured or not. If you don't know what clip did it, then do it to all clips. Dunno if it will work for you guys but its worth a shot.

For the solution to make DivX codec workable and still be able to publish refer to my post:
