Screen goes black
Posted: 18 Jan 2010 12:05 PM
Ok so after I save my windows movie maker project doing save movie file and my computer it downloads it fine. However, when I go to watch it using windows media player, all of the text slides that I had on the project show up but none of the videos plays. Instead, a black screen shows while I can hear the audio from those video clips being played. About half way through the video the video clips begin to play. PLEASE HELP ME!

Welcome to the forums.

What's the file format of your source files and which versions of Windows and Movie Maker do you have?

If your source files play normally in Windows Media Player, go to "Tools > Options > Compatibility" in Movie Maker and uncheck all the filters ending in .ax and see if that helps.

Try breaking your project up into smaller pieces and see if you get the same problem when you save a movie in each of the pieces.

If you do and you wouldn't mind sharing one of your source files with me, upload it to MediaFire and I'll download it and check it out on my system when I get a chance. If you decide to do that, post the download link for the file back here or use the "Contact Me" page on my website to send me the link.

Yes. Import the movies from each piece into a new Movie Maker project, add them to the timeline/storyboard in the desired order, perform any final editing and then save this as your final movie.

Excuse my ignorance, but how do you split a project into separate parts??? Thanks.

Create part 1 in one project, part 2 in another project, etc. Save each part as a movie, then splice them together at the end.

If you are asking how you do it if you have already created one huge project... then create multiple copies of your project files (say part1.mswmm, part2.mswmm, etc.). Then in each part, remove everything but the part you want. So in part1.mswmm, delete everything from the end until you get to a point where the project will save as a movie. Now in part2.mswmm, delete the part you already saved and do a similar deleting from the end until part 2 will save as a movie. Repeat as necessary until you can save all the parts.

Try converting all your video clips to .wmv format using Freemake Video Converter. Movie Maker prefers .wmv for audio and .wma for audio. Other types can lead to black video or other problems with saving.
