Problem with Editing/Triming HD Content Posted: 06 Nov 2009 02:10 AM |
I have been playing around with the latest Windows Movie Maker on Windows 7. I have been trying to edit AVCHD Video (.M2TS) files. Everything seems to work fine and I trim the videos. I then save the project and save the movie to an HD or standard format. What I have found is that my trims and editing are ignored. Everything looked alright in the preview in movie maker but something seems to be wrong once the converstion happens. This has happened regularly on several different video files. I've also edited several standard definition video files and have not experienced this problem at all.
Any help anyone can provide would be great!
Thanks,
Chris |

| By ignoring your edit, so you mean no cuts at all, or that your cuts are in slightly different places? |

| I've seen both behaviors, sometimes no cuts at all and some times different locations. |

| Actually...I'm mistaken. The cuts would be in different locations on the video. |

I've not got a hd file to try at the moment, but this often happens when editing a file that has a GOP structure, only one frame every x frames is editable, so if you have a gop of 15 frames, you can only cut every 15 frames, you try to cut at frame number 7 and you'll go back 7 frames.
Often you have to convert the file to another format to enable frame accurate editing, or use an app that uses proxy files.

I'm sorry skier-hughes your answer is B*T
WMV codec is also GOP based, and have you been getting half a second (or more) errors in your editing?
read this

I think the defult profies in WMM are GOP of 4 seconds |
we can meet on Skype once we decide the time.

| Sorry when the OP said he was trying to edit "AVCHD Video (.M2TS) files" I thought he meant AVCHD Video (.M2TS) files not WMV files ;~) |

Indeed he is trying to edit AVCHD file,
but your answer seems to give a general notion about long GOP editing, that can be done only on the I frames, and thats is B*T.
As I referd you to the WMV spec as beeing also a long GOP codec |
