What a disappointment the new WMM is... Posted: 22 Aug 2009 11:44 AM |
I was excited to read there was a new version of WMM released and then was very disappointed to discover that significant features of the product have been removed- most notably the stacked timeline which made the coordinated construction of a movie so intuitive.
It's frustrating that the comments made in this forum by the development team are aimed at explaining why they removed these features- as if an appraisal of their job performance and a discussion of product strategy should be the topic of conversation rather than the users' loss of these features. I'm not really interested in your product strategy and it doesn't matter why you removed these features. Your product is not as useful to me and I don't really care if you hope to gain a greater number of users by dumbing down WMM.

Welcome to the forum. Experienced users of Movie Maker are apt to agree with you, but as one of them I don't share your frustration with comments made in this forum or elsewhere.
Vista users still have Movie Maker MM6 and MM2.6. Windows 7 users will have nothing to start with and need to add the video editing apps they want. Windows Live Movie Maker is just one of the choices. |

I understand your point about the purpose of this release and who this will benefit. I guess experienced users such as myself were expecting this to be a new & improved version of the existing WMM with greater functionality for us- as almost all 'new releases' of a product are. The same expectation we'd have for a new & improved version of EXCEL I suppose...
But this flavor of WMM is more like Microsoft's release of 'BOB' 14 years ago which was a simplified version of Windows aimed at inexperienced home users, or it's like the release of a simplified version of EXCEL for Linux. This is a lateral release and not a vertical one. |

The first wave of Windows Live Movie Maker users will most likely be the experienced and disappointed ones. We won't be hearing from the newbies who start with it for a while, not until Windows 7 rolls out in new computers and users find they don't have a 'classic' version of Movie Maker.
Yesterday I wanted to make a 1 minute video from 3 video clips... on my Windows 7 system. I first tried Windows Live Movie Maker, but soon turned to the copy of MM2.1 on it. Here's the video on Facebook.
Critter of the Day #8
My problem is being experienced enough to know what I can do, and want to do. The bluescreening and custom titling can't be done with the new version, at least not yet. My challenge is to learn enough about the capbabilities of WLMM and other user options to provide some assistance to the Movie Maker community.... experienced and not.

I can definitely agree with you bluezebra. I was definitely disappointed as well. The problem isn't even with the fact that they made it more simple. It's the fact that there aren't more advance features so that yes new people can use it and the more advanced users can really edit with it.
To be honest though removing the timeline and making it the way it is now makes it even more complicated than it was before. It's much harder in fact to edit. Maybe because I'm thinking of doing more advanced things but even from a simple format everything is so bunched together that it makes it so stiff to edit. |

| Agreed. I came here to find out how to turn on the old features, but apparently they have emasculated the program. I absolutely have to have an easy way to sync sound and video. This program no longer works for me. |

dchall8, when you add sound or music to your project you can move it around on the pseudo timeline.
And if you select the audio or a place where there is video and audio, a new tab shows up called Music Tools where you can trim/split set volume, fadeInOut etc.
These might be enough for your projects. Experiment with it.

I think dchall8 is looking for the ability to synch photos/video with beats in the music, to match the intensity of the audio timeline, etc. In the "old" WMM you could actually see a waveform representation of the music.
Hopefully future updates to WLMM will return the ability to see the audio as a waveform... |

I agree. I've been using WMM for many, many years (usually for fun, simple things) but I'm now running Windows 7 and Windows Live Movie Maker has become (as far as I can tell) and essentially useless program. Like others, my thoughts are:
1. the storyboard is a waste, where are the timelines?
2. I've trying to REMOVE audio from a video but can't find any way to do that - I can only add more music on top of existing audio.
3. As unbelievable as this may be - I can't seem to combine clips!!!! That's beyond comprehension!
4. Because I can't combine clips - it's no longer possible to do a LOT with other so-called editing "features".
Why did M$ destroy WMM and replace it with the new useless version. It took all of five minutes to figure out that WMM is now a completely worthless program. Apparently, there's no way to get an older version either.
Guess I'm going to have to do everything in Adobe Premier. |

| Yes there is no time line but you can 2. and 3. that you have mensioned, read the above posts, you will need to spend more than 5 minutes trying it out and finding/useing/experimenting all of its features |
