| Start planning for an upgrade to Windows 7, you will be very pleased. Windows XP is over 10 years old... That in computer time is like 1000 dog years. =p |

| I've been running Windows 7 (Beta and RC) since January, and it's terrific. The only thing I miss is the version of Movie Maker on Vista. |

I invited all my versions of Movie Maker over to my Windows 7 system for a party... and introduced them to Windows Live Movie Maker.
MM1, MM2.1, and MM2.6 are all getting along well with WLMM. MM2.6 even fixed an issue I had with MM2.1. MM6 hasn't shown up yet. |

| Okay wait, am I missing something? You don't have all those versions of MM on your Windows 7 machine...do you? I want to get 7 when it comes out, and I've heard the MM for 7 is v2.6. I've also heard it's a scaled down version. I really like 2.1 (XP), but it handles MPEG-2 relatively pooly. Kinda choppy. The final product is choppy, too. |

MM for Windows 7 is really Windows Live Movie Maker. MM2.6 was made for Vista.
Yes, I have all those versions on my Windows 7 system. |

I don't know how to PM you, so I'll ask here. I have a few questions.
Do you run MM 1 and 2.1 in XP mode? And how is it that 2.1 does not replace 1? Is 2.6 a good version and does it handle MPEG-2 better than 2.1? How about Live MM...does it also have a lot of good features and handle MPEG-2 well?
Your setup sounds interesting and I'd like to try it myself. I just don't understand how a newer version of MM can run along side an older version. Is there a trick to installing all of them like that? And lastly, do you think MM6 will be able to run on Windows 7? Was MM6 any good?
Thanks! |

I just found answers to some of my questions on an article you wrote on the subject. It looks like MM2.1 doesn't work perfectly well in Windows 7 (with issues of still pictures turning out completely black in the finished product, for one) unless you try running it under XP mode...I don't remember reading if you tried that or not. I think either way I'll steer clear of MM2.1 on Windows 7, because I have no idea on how to register DLLs!
So I guess it's either MM2.6 or WLMM...or both as it sounds like they can both be installed in Windows 7 with no conflicts. So, just curious...how close is MM2.6 to 2.1? Is it worth getting at all? Thanks again, and sorry for all the questions. |

Installing MM2.6 on my Windows 7 system resolved the issues I had with still pictures in MM2.1.
Yes, you would need to register the MM2.1 DLLs... and MM1 also.
MM2.6 and WLMM would be OK... but as MM2.6 is a stripped down version of 2.1, v2.1 has more features. For example MM2.6 can't capture video from a mini-DV camcorder connected by firewire... and it can't capture music or other sounds, something I use often in MM2.1.
Except for paying customers, I prefer chatting publicly about Movie Maker topics. You can't have too many questions, but I might run out of answers. |

"Yes, you would need to register the MM2.1 DLLs... and MM1 also."
Do I need MM1 in order for MM2.1 to worK? Or can I simply copy only the MM2.1 folder over to Win7?
And is there a specific order in which these things must be done? For example, must I have downloaded and installed WLMM first or copied the MM2.1 folder the Win7 system before MM2.6 will effectively download and install? (The MM2.6 download page says that you must have the original Vista MM version first, but I don't have that.) Or is MM2.6 a stand-alone download in Win7?
In between asking these questions, I'm doing as much research as I can on the subject, while checking back here. Thanks again! |

no, you don't need MM1 as a prereq for MM2.1
do it in any sequence you like... if you copy the MM2.1 folder over to Win 7 you'll need to register the MM2.1 dll's or you'll find lots of features don't work...
On the MM2.6 download site, ignore the cautions and do it... it's a stand-alone download/installation. |

| Thanks for all your help! Now all I need to figure out is if I'm going with the 32 bit system or 64 bit! |

| Good luck... we're going thru the same thinking about 32 bit versus 64 bit for my wife's new computer. She does Photoshop/Painter work, not movies. |

Okay, I'm sold on the 64 bit version. After a bit of research (and seeing I'll be getting a new computer and other hardware anyway) I've decided to go with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit version. On what computer, I haven't totally decided yet.
But I'm getting off track....I'm using Windows XP Professional SP3 32 bit. Can I still copy the Movie Maker folder on to the new Win7 64 bit machine? And do I need to have XP mode installed? Thanks again! |

How come it seems to me that this new Windows Live Movie Maker somehow looks like Apple's iMovie in Mac OS, no ?

| It does seem like iMovie but a dumbed down version. I'm sorry but as excited that I am that there is a new windows movie maker this one just got downgraded for me. Instead of improving on what needed to be improved upon they changed it and made it even more difficult to use. |

I've been taking part in their latest blog post (I'm C.W.), and I've had a number of detailed replies from Mike Torres. I have to give him credit: he hasn't been giving me the Pollyanna WLMM sales job that I usually read from others in the WLMM development team.
Nevertheless, the number one request - a fully functioning timeline - continues to be ignored. That's what people want in a future release above all else. TIMELINE, TIMELINE, TIMELINE! But, from what I can gather from Torres' responses, the WLMM development team will continue with their storyboard obsession until it kills them. He says the storyboard will add fancier gimmicks that provide "more timeline capabilities", without the elegant precision of rubber band editing. [Ironically, this may wreck the simplicity of a storyboard, and end up pleasing no one.]
Not to be too sharp, Considerate Guy, but MS will continue to be overloaded with complaints if it refuses to put a proper timeline back into the MM program. MS's stubborn refusal is the cause for these complaints, and niceties will only give them a blank cheque to continue down their timeline-less path. In other words, they HAVE received constructive responses - give us a proper timeline! - but MS has shrugged its shoulders.
In the meantime, WMM6 Vista users are out in the cold: no officially ported W7 version of WMM6 (like Apple did with iMovie 06), no support for MSWMM projects (unlike iMovie 08 projects that work in iMovie 09), and no new program that matches the capabilities of WMM6. As a lonely Windows guy fighting against the tide in a Mac office, I find these are dark days indeed.

| Any chance Microsoft will allow MM6 to be downloaded onto Windows 7. I liked this version the best! |

You can do this yourself if you have a backup of your Windows Vista computer. Pull out the complete contents of the C:\Program Files\Movie Maker folder. Restore these to the same location on your Windows 7 machine. Next register the 4 DLLs that start with WMM2<something>.DLL.
There have been a couple of posts from someone that has created an installer that does just that without out the manual steps. |

Windows 7 compatible software for capturing VHS tapes Posted: 08 Jan 2010 03:32 PM |
I have windows 7 and am trying to buy software that can copy my old VHS tapes to my computer. ( Note; I do have the proper wires )
Edit, then burn to DVD. ( Or do I need to copy directly to a dvd, then edit etc after)
I have tried the Roxio software and it did not work.
Any suggestions. I am a novice and appreciate info in laymans terms.
Thanks pam |

Welcome to the forum....
VHS tapes are analog and the computer is digital, so you need something that converts the analog signal to digital.
Windows 7 doesn't come with anything that does it. You need to use a 3rd party gadget of some sort. I use my mini-DV camcorder... plugging the VHS signal into it and connecting it in turn by firewire to my Windows 7 computer (that's called 'pass-thru' as the camcorder does the analog to digital conversion and passes it through to the computer.
There are a number of hardware devices that do it... be sure that whatever you use is compatible with Windows 7. |
