Now I only need to figure out how the tip is to be understood. :)

Download a msi installation file? From where? A little walk through would be nice...

I just went through the steps again to install Photo Story 3 on my Windows 7 computer... and it doesn't work, at least not yet.

The download site requires validation of the system to verify it's genuine, and says the validation process won't start working until after the official release of Windows 7 on October 22, 2009.

Downloading the installation .msi file on XP and trying to install it on Windows 7 results in the message 'PS3 won't work on Windows 7'.

Looks like I'll be sitting between 'activated' and 'validated' for a couple months. I used my Windows 7 product key to do the activation but validation won't work until after Oct 22. Until then I won't know if PS3 will work on Windows 7. It worked on the beta versions so I'd like to assume it'll continue to work on the final.

Having recently installed Windows 7, I can confirm that Photostory 3 will NOT install. This is a real issue as I use it extensively. I have not been able to track anything down on the Microsoft websites about this. Does anyone know of a workround?

It's now after Oct 22. I can download PS3 but it won't install on Windows 7.

One work-around might be 'Windows XP Mode' for Windows 7. I've downloaded it but not installed it yet to check...

Photo Story 3.1, the version included in the Microsoft Digital Image 2006 suite, installs and works fine on Windows 7.

Also, the Windows Live Movie Maker has an "AutoMovie" feature which can put a set of pictures together quickly, with music and make a slideshow with Pan & Zooms. It has an automatic pan/zoom which seems to intelligently determine the area of focus and then picks the best pan/zoom. Or you can change them manually to a different pan/zoom of your choice.

I think Microsoft is essentially taking the concept of PhotoStory 3 and trying to incorporate it into WLMM. What it is missing is the exact choice of pan/zoom to specify the starting and ending regions. Maybe that will be a future release?

I added this to my website....

"...Photo Story 3 doesn't install on Windows 7 but Photo Story 3.1, the version included in the Microsoft Digital Image 2006 suite, installs and works fine. Microsft no longer supports the Digital Image Suite 2006, and the compatibility options in Windows 7 are too difficult for the average user of Photo Story 3. I consider Vista the end of the road for Photo Story 3. Plan to use other slide show software when you move to Windows 7...."

The link you used doesn't have the word 'Suite' in it... and has a link at the bottom of the page to the PS3 download page.

What I installed was the Digital Image Suite 2006 Starter Edition, a 60 day trial version handed out at the digital media galleries in San Francisco and New York in 2005... I was there doing the handing out. I didn't purchase the full version so I don't know yet if it's a path to getting PS3 on Windows 7. A Windows 7 user just purchased it from Amazon and will be telling me how it goes for him.

The link is the starter edition
and there is also an update here
http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/a/5/4a5de421-4606-4809-8bcb-78408cca3498/Update.exe

I still didn't install anything , but have found PIXPSTRY.exe that is PS3.1 in a PI directory with all its DLLs. running it as is is no good.
I hope installing only the POD.msi will do. I want to image my system partion before installing anything

About XP mode in Windows 7:

Is it possible to use XP mode for Photo Story 3?
Is it possible to run WMM in XP mode and use animated gifs?

These things means the world to me. Hoping desperately for an answer...

The question is: ca you download Photo Story 3 while in XP mode? Or transfer via USB pen or something?

I simply don't understand what I read in the posts above. What is the purpose of XP mode if it doesn't work? You can run old aps in XP mode but you can't install them. Is that is? XP mode is useless?

PapaJohn - FYI, I was able to download and install Photo Story 3 on a Windows 7 Ultimate system I just set-up without a problem and without having to use the Windows XP Mode you mentioned.

PapaJohn - it was the 32 bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate. I hope to also try it on a system with the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium later this week; I'll let you know what happens once I get the chance to try it.

I'm using the final release of the 32 bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate on two systems and can't install PS3 on either. Hopefully we'll converge on the core issue and resolve or work-around it.

I had a pretty clean install of PS 3; the only filter that showed up in Movie Maker was quartz.dll.

Some users can install and use PS3 on Windows 7 OK.... others including myself can't. And I have heard from one heavy duty user who thought his was working fine found he couldn't tweak the motion pan/zoom settings.

Still collecting clues about what works and doesn't.

Most of the features of Photo Story will work on Windows 7, but not all. The Pan and Zoom effects are impaired.

dobberp - what specific aspects were impaired and which version of Windows 7 do you have? The reason I ask is that pan/zoom appears to work as expected on my Windows 7 system.
