How can I lighten a windows movie
Posted: 22 Jun 2008 10:23 AM
I am a complete novice when it comes to Movie Maker. I have a wmm file and the room is fairly dark although it is not so dark that the images cannot be viewed. Is there anyway that I can make the images brighter or the room appear brighter, whichever the case may be?
I would appreciate any guidance regarding this issue.
Regards

In Movie Maker you can apply the Effect called Brightness, Increase to the clip(s) on either your Storyboard or Timeline. You can apply it multiple times to your clip(s) to get increasing levels of brightness.

Although the increase brightness effect tends to wash it out a bit. You may want to try an "increase contrast" effect.

Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me where these adjustments can be made, I have searched all I can find in movie maker but could not find the tabs needed in order to try and fix my problem.

Papa John

Is there also a way to lighten a jpeg photo other than by using the "Brightness, increase" effect? (Lighten without getting a washed-out look?)

Hi Curt.. you would do it with your image editing app... such as IrfanView, Paint.net, Photoshop, etc.

Enhance the source file... no need to remove it from the timeline and readd. Movie Maker will use the source file in whatever conditon it's in when you save the movie.

Gamma correction in IrfanView does a nice job of this.

PapaJohn and PatrickL,

Thanks to both of you. Those work just fine.

Patrick, it may just have been a lucky coincidence, but Irfanview's "Auto Adjust Color" automatically did a super job on two different old, dark photos, at least as good as I was able to do playing around with "Image/ Enhance Colors." I really liked that.

just wondering, does Infanview allow you to color correct a video or just a picture?
when I try to adjust the color on a video most of the options on the drop down Image menu are grayed out & can't be clicked on.

Irfanview gamma adjustment is photos only. If you have Vista, view post 173867 for effects to darken/lighten videos with gamma adjustments.

PatrickL.....Thank you for recommending Infranview. Crying

It's not that I'm not happy with it. I'm crying in joy!!! I have a very old painting of my Great Great Grandmother, with my Great Grandmother, her two sisters, and my Grandmother. The painting is so old and there is a family feud over it for many years.

When I last saw it, I took many digital pictures for the 5 minutes that I got to see it. Unfortunately they either came out dark or there were flash flares on the photos. I just took a dark photo and used the auto correct and was amazed at how well it captured the original....I've been looking for software and never thought of using it.

Now I plan to make copies of it and have a blow up printed and have it professional mounted with musuem glass so that my kids have something from their family's pass. Big Smile

How cool is that!! Thanks for sharing the story. Image editors are great things. The various tools they have can greatly enhance old photos. I've scanned and fixed a lot of old photographs. Many times I like a bit of the faded look, but the ability to take out creases and folds by cloning/brushing can make them look very original. A lot of the old photographs hold up better than more recent ones...an 1895 wedding photo of some ancestors can match anything my slr can take today. The only thing is that it looks like they couldn't move at all!!! An Office Max near me still does 11'' x 17'' for $1.98 on high gloss photo paper. I don't have the heart to tell them its priced wrong, but at least i'm a frequent customer..LOL

Remember, when you signed up, you agreed that all secrets shall remain in this forum. The penalty is that YOUR Movie Maker will hang up and crash more often than it does now!!! If anyone calls my Office Max, I'll have to deny they ever sold me dozens of low priced photos!! LOL
