Windows XP Media Center Edition, any comments?
Posted: 20 Aug 2003 07:05 PM
Has anyone purchased a Windows XP Media Center Edition PC yet? Windows XP Media Center Edition

What do you think? Is it worth me scrapping my one year old TiVo?

Any rumors on Microsoft selling the OS alone so that I could build my own Media Center PC?

It came on my new laptop, but I'm not a TV person so I don't use the recording features. And people I know who have Tivo love it.

PapaJohn,

Is it capable of recording TV and editing the recorded files/shows with Movie Maker or another video editing tool?

Yes, it can record TV. Every morning it automatically downloads the latest TV guide listings for a zillion channels. And every day at 5 pm it trys to record a show that I told it to. But my cable isn't plugged into the laptop, so I get an error message instead of saved show.

Not being a TV oriented person, I've only dabbled in it a bit to test it. I've saved TV shows to my hard drive and had it automatically record them. And played them in the Media Center software.

But I haven't tried to use the saved movies in Movie Maker. Maybe I did try a little, but didn't see how to do it easily, and I haven't tried to figure it out since. The saved TV shows are not in a normal video file format - so conversion would be needed if MM2 can't capture it directly from the TV. The internal TV tuner shows up in MM2, but I got an error message when trying to capture directly. Maybe it's a digital rights issue, but probably just me not having figured it out.
